The Burley Piccolo is extremely stable due to it?s unique ball-bearing rack hitch attachment. It is much more stable than the seat post style attachments. The six speeds allow your child to adjust to a comfortable pedaling speed, whether grinding up a hill or screaming down one. I purchased a Sshwalbe Stelvio high performance 120psi narrower tire to greatly reduce rolling resistance for road rides. Included is the original wider tire for mountain biking and cruising around if you prefer. I would switch the tires back an forth for road and mountain. The pedals have toe clips that I put on them. At first you might think that wouldn?t be appropriate for a child, but you have to understand that the child does not have to balance, so getting in and out in a hurry is not an issue. You are holding the bike up as the child gets on. I found with my son that the toe clips kept his feet on the pedals better and the ball of the foot in the correct position. Of course you can always remove them. The rack can be adapted to many bike configurations. I used it on my racing road bike that had no rack attachments and even used it on my carbon fiber mountain bike. If you are unsure whether you can put a rack on your bike let me know about your bike and I can probably suggest an easy solution. A new Burley Piccolo now goes for $359 at REI.
